Most of these pieces are made from hand-stitched fabric, soaked in porcelain slip, dried into shape and then fired to 1300°C. During the firing process the fibre is burnt away leaving a perfect porcelain image of the original. The stitching and weave and creases and folds persist as the original fabric disappears - a synthesis of petrification where the organic cotton is replaced by mineral ceramic.
